Default Odd residue under engine oil cap

Hello All,

I have D5 50TDI from new with just under 15k km. So far, I have put almost 4l of engine oil as it keeps “drinking” it. Dealer told me that this normal if I drive 120km/h or faster, considering allowed speed on speedways in Poland is 120km/h and motorways is 140km/h, I asked if I should drive at 90km/h.
To me this isn’t a normal situation!
Got once the dreaded battery warning however it disappeared 30s later.
Today, I had to put another 300-400ml of oil as it showed that it is low. Just to discover that there was some yellowish residue under the cap. I read this could be due to short trips or cold weather. Never had it on my 2016 Q7 while owing it for 3 years.

Any idea, before I embarrass myself calling my local Audi dealer?

I don't know diesels...but that looks like coolant getting into your crank case...which is not good. Web search "coolant in oil" and let me know if the images that come up look like what you have.

It does look like it!

I hope this isn’t due to blown head gasket.

Cold weather can definitely cause that. I've seen it on my cars during periods of deep cold. However, you do want to ensure you are not losing coolant, Tyov.

You should not be consuming so much oil.

It isn’t that cold something between +1 to -4 Celsius.

Regarding oil consumption, I do find it pretty high. On same engine 3.0 TDI, in my Q7, I had to add 1l every 10k km. which wasn’t that bad.

Coolant or it's water and fuel dilution b/c the car isn't getting hot enough. Diesels are even worse for this.

Just drove 500km other day and 150km, today. Most of it on speedways with 120km/h.
Definitely warmed up properly!

Yeah I'm inclined to think it's coolant then but I don't know enough about how the TDI engine works.

I will keep an eye on the coolant level.

I've owned a few Audi 3.0 TDi's including my current A8 50 Tdi and also one that had been remapped with over 100,000m already on the clock.
I've never had oil cap mayonnaise in any, and oil consumption was very low (maybe 1 litre every every 8-10000m).

They are slow to warm up because they are much more thermally efficient than petrol/gasoline engines, but your symptoms are not normal.

I would try another garage.
