Default 2nd Gear GRINDAGE

Hey..
regretfully I think my second gear syncro is going out. If I shift from 1st to 2nd with any kind of high rpm/quick shifting it grinds then pops into gear.. Has anyone else had this happen? If so how expensive was it? What did you do to fix it?
92 audi 100 73,000 miles. 5 speed.
thanks,
Dave....

Default Go easy on the tranny...

and learn to double clutch. the tranny will last you another 73,000mi. The more you grind it, well you know the rest.

Also, flush the gear oil.. Put some redline MT-90 oil in there.

Default Are you familiar with "double clutching?"

Trucking term. When you shift, the gear you are shifting to has to match the speed of the gear you were in, but it is spinning slower. If you let out the clutch when you pass through neutral and then push it back in (assuming your foot is off the gas) the front of the tranny slows down by engaging with the slower moving driveline and takes the work off the syncros to slow down the next engaging gear. when the tach gets to where the driveline speed in the next gear you seek matches the engine speed, push the clutch back in and shift into second. Really, just shift to neutral, let the clutch out, push it right back in, and shift to second. Down shifting works just the opposite, you have to rev the engine in neutral with the clutch out until the engine speed reaches the point it would be at when you put it in gear and let out the clutch. If you watch your tach you'll get so you can shift without the syncros working at all, even without a clutch, if you want to abuse it a little :-). In the alternative, sometimes a tranny shifts good at one RPM and poorly at others. Try to find the smooth shift point. I would not try to fix it unless it just don't work at all.
