4th gear auto transmission problem fixed.
I received this email and permission to post it from Dan in Boise. Sounds like it's a good fix that should be documented here.
******************************
I purchased a 97 A6 Quattro and it had trouble to shift into 4th, instead it would go to neutral then cause a code and go into limp mode (2nd gear only) Once cleared it would shift 1,2,3 then neutral and the same cycle over and over.
I ended up contacting a company that works on the ZF transmission and the person I talked to he told me to check the "Servo piston assembly" which is located on drivers side, right behind the axle on the transmission there is a circlip and cap that come off and one of the Belleville springs (washer) was broke which is a part of the servo piston. It's either that or the band inside the transmission that would cause no 4th gear.
It was a $45 part and about 20min of work.
If anybody has a similar problem I hope this will help. I was glad that I didn't have to replace the whole tranny.
Thanks,
Dan

wow! That's impressive! Congratulations! I am hoping...
...to solve my problems with the tranny only by oil change. I experience some noise on first and second gear, that dessapears at third and fourth. Also a mechanic that saw the car was not impressed by the shifting. I may say that there is some slight kick from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3 but not that substantial. The fact that I observe this only at 1 and 2 makes me doubting that this will be solved only with the oil change, but we will see...
Greetings!

This information came from Nat Wentworth at Eriksson Industries.
I called them and explained the symptoms and he knew right away what the problem was. Very helpful person. Thanks go to him.

Hey, I didn't realize you were the Dan who initially emailed me until today.
It dawned on me this morning that you probably were!
