The guy I bought this from said the next day he came out to start the car and got no click or anything so he sold to me saying bad starter we drove 75 miles to field fix it and was planning on driving it back but we can't figure out where the starter is
A friend told me to take out the alternator but the shop said I didn't have to

Your friend is right, 'this guy' is incorrect. The alternator is way up front just behind the bumper. The starter is in the back driving the flywheel. If it at least clicks then have somebody turn the key while you are under it listening for the click.

You have to disconnect the battery, then remove the alternator to get to the starter on the 2.8L 12 valve engine. The starter is behind the alternator, bolted to the front of the bellhousing. It is held by two bolts and there are two wires. One bolt is removed from the rear and the other from the front. The alternator will come out, but you may have to loosen the ATF cooler lines.
