96 A6 - Big Time Power Steering Screw up
Hi All,
Mom has a 96 A6 2.8L Quattro.
Yesterday, she said that she had a major power steering pump leak (pouring from the pump. She then realized that she was putting (at least she thinks) brake fluid into the power Steering tank.
Im 99% sure that this destroyed the power steering pump, but I will also assume that the rack seals has been destroyed as a result.
Now, to fix this mess, I am assuming that the pump and rack have to be replaced.
Does the booster and 'bomb' have to be changed as well, plus lines having to be cleaned? Sounds like this will be a nightmare of a project....

Brake fluid is highly corrosive. Anything with rubber or plastic parts that's touched the fluid will need to be replaced. I'd use a strong solvent to thoroughly clean all metal parts too so you don't end up with brake fluid residue in the new system.
I don't think you'd need to replace the brake booster, and these cars don't have brake bombs.
