'96 A6: How hard to change thermostat in engine?

Audi says you "can" change the thermostat without removing the timing belt! But its much easier to remove the timing belt!
This is why when folks get their timing belts changed, they also do the thermostat, and water pump! ;O) Because shops are gonna charge you the rate for a timing belt, just to do a thermostat!

check out this link. You have to remove the plastic covers and the ribbed accessory belt to get to this view. You may or may not have to remove the timing belt to remove the thermostat. The mechanic that replaced mine said he did not remove the timing belt, merely loosened it.
