I found the other bulbs at NAPA that replace the OSRAM 2721. 99 cents each.
But when I opened up the LCD module, lo and behold! Tiny little soldered dudes for that guy.
Are all the rest the same for the temp and odometer?
Anyone know of a common replacement bulb?

I've never seen a post saying how many of each bulb is needed for the instrument panel. Can someone tell me how many OSRAM 2721 or equivalent are needed? and how many of the grain-of-wheat bulbs (Radio Shack #272-1092) to be soldered in? I am installing them in a 1996 A6Q Avant.

By the way, I found bulbs here:
http://www.topbulb.com/find/prod_list.asp_Q_intCategory_E_I_A_intMinWatts_E_1_ A_intMaxWatts_E_2_A_REF_E_186
with a search for 'OSRAM 2721 lamp'. Price is $1.50 each plus $7.95 FedEx Ground.

3 Grain of Wheat Bulbs Required...
All of mine were burnt out from a voltage spike. I just replaced them today. It takes time. Use caution when soldering.
2 required for gear indicator.
1 required for temperature indicator.
Direct replacement is Radio Shack 272-1092C:
#7219 Micro Lamp
12 volts
60mA
Wire-terminal base
Bulb-type: T-1
Brightness 0.15MSCP
Skew # 40293 12132
Cost $1.49 for two in a package
Buy two packages

BTW - Grain o' Wheat can be used to rebuild the orange OSRAMs
I couldn't find a quick replacement for the orange based OSRAM bulb in the odometer, so I took out the bulb and twist connector contacts and soldered on one of the grain o's wheat bulbs from Radio Shack.
Then I pushed the bulb and contacts back into the base. ... twisted it back into the IP.
It worked just perfect. The lighting matches the rest of the panel. It saved me a trip to the dealer.
I'll keep some of these around to rebuild the other orange based OSRAMs when the bulbs die.
Now there will be a run on Radio Shack for these bulbs and the price will double. Ha!
