Default '97 A6 Quattro Oil Change

Hi all,
I have been thinking of doing a Oil Change on my car myself and am looking for advice on what Oil to use and also What filter..

Looking at the forums here, it seems like most of you prefer Mann Filters.. Can somebody give more info on that..

Can I use Synthetic Oil for this car and if so, what grade? does the filter change depending on the selection of the oil?

Also, if anyone can suggest as to where I can get these, I would much appreciate it..

thanks
somu.

This link shows the filters and tells where I bought them. I've used the Mahle and Mann and they both seem fine. I also use Mobil 1 Synthetic 10W-30. Different people seem to use different weights and brands, but I guess it depends on what you are comfortable with and the climate you'll drive in. The oil change itself it quite easy due to the placement of the filter and drain plug.

https://forums.audiworld.com/a6100/msgs/25296.phtml</a

Default Synthetic oil

Synthetic oil produces less resistance and is more heat resistant. On the other side if you had a mineral oil, switching to snthetic can introduce a minor oil leak. I switched to synthetic at 60K. I use Mobil1 0W40 or Petrosyn 5w40.

If you cannnot get it, I am sure, that Mobil1 5w30 is good enough for somer and Mobil 0w30 is good for winter.

As a group, we are a strange bunch! On the one hand, we have people that love to use oils that don't seem to conform to the Audi handbook, generally having the opinion that because the can says "synthetic" that the contents are magical, while on the other hand, there are people who are competely intmidated by Audi antifreeze, and are afraid to use any other aluminum-suitable brand, not matter what the dealerr charges. I have never used anything else except 10W30 or 40. 5W makes me very nervous. 0-W is mental institution stuff.
