A6 2.6 Avant 1995 - Timing belt question

I asked my local audi dealer about the timing belt changing intervals on this car and he told me (after looking in his books) that this engine did not have an interval for changing the timing-belt because it was a chain, not a belt, but he would still recommend for me to have it changed at 120.000 kilometres/75.000 miles.
Is it necessary to change this thing, as my car is approaching this length i would really need to know. Afterall, a chain should be much more durable than a belt i would think?
All comments are appreciated.

Your car have a belt not a chain, your dealers book must be wrong. When you're changing the belt, change the waterpump at the same time since a broken waterpump is the primary cause to a broken belt. The recommended interval for changing it is indeed 120000 km.

I would change dealers if they don't know that you have a belt (which it does). I have done it twice so far and have about 165k on it. and you might as well do the water pump at the same time.

Thanks alot for the input everyone.
Let me specify, this car does indeed have a 2.6 litre V6 engine, and are as en_knapp said, not sold in the US as far as i know. Really starting to question my dealers expertise now if it is correct that my car does have a belt and not a chain as they said....?!?
I failed to specify in the original post that this was a V6 engine, don't know if this makes a difference though. Anyone have any comments/experience about/with this?

it does not have the variable length inlet manifold and is rated at about 150bhp.
I would guess that the water pump is the same but the timing belt could be shorter because the block could be a little shorter due to the shorter stroke crank used. It could be that Audi used the same crank as the 2.8 with longer rods so a lot of parts could be shared.
Much of the advice seen here that appiles to the 2.8 will equally apply to your engine.
I would recommend changing the timing belt at 70 to 80k miles (110 to 120k km), and I would say it is wise to change the water pump, tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time.

Thanks for all the input guys, since the guys at the shop said it was a chain i was considering dropping the timing belt change, but like you said it was a belt, not a chain, so i'll have to get it done somehow![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
