Antenna and radio reception question

I have always had poor radio reception especially AM since I installed my Pioneer HU. I only hooked up the antenna wire via an adapter to the antenna input. Question is: is there any type of amplifer or some other wire that I need to hook up besides the antenna cable itself? Is there any place I should check for a loose connection? Where does the antenna wire run? Is there any type of fix for my problem? Thanks

As far as FM, the OEM radios have a built in antenna amplifier. That is why the antenna connection looks like a large phono style connector.
When I installed my Blaupunkt, I purchased an amplifier adapter from Pep Boys for around $20 which has a 'normal' antenna plug that goes into the radio, a power wire, and the large 'phono' male connector which connects to the Audi antenna wire.
Because my car has the antennas in the glass, there was no AM or FM reception without the amplifier.
My car actually had two antenna connectors, front and rear, but I only connected the front one.
I still don't get AM reception but the FM reception is excellent.
