Default Any ideas on how to remove broken guide pins from engine block?....

Steve and I successfully pulled the heads yesterday, but in the process those guide pins that the head slides onto when you set it in place broke off inside the block. I need to get them out somehow and am at a loss for how. Would appreciate some help/advice, but not just ideas. If someone has successfully done this before, please let me know how.

Thanks!
Mark.

You'll need a screw extractor & some strong pentrating oil to remove (at a minimum).

Default You drill the broken stud/guide pin & then insert the screw extractor in the hole. It is...

tappered w/ a left-hand thread or bite. So, as you turn into the hole, the screw extractor becomes tighter and turns out the broken stud, which is a right-hand thread. If you have never used one, you might consider finding someone who has. The only other option is to drill out the broken stud/internal threads and use a Heli-coil or similar thread insert for repair. For drilling the broken stud, you'll need a hardened drill bit (e.g., carbide bit).

Default An Easyout. Right, but these are not studs. They're pins that are driven in...

... with a hammer. They're like a hollow sleeve. They've broken off below the surface of where the head mates with the block. I tried an easyout but it doesn't seem to bite. Plus, I don't know that turning the thing will necessarily remove it because it's not threaded.

Default You do need to be very carefull because I think that the sleeved ....

holes are used to carry the oil supply to the head. It is important that they have the sleeve in place and that you do not get any swarf down the hole!

You could try using a large drill bit that just fits inside the broken sleeve to see if it will dig in and then pull it out.

Default Those two little tiney holes carry oil to the head???

He's talking about the guide pins that hold the head and the headgasket while placing them both on the block. They are less than a qaurter inch in diameter. I think we're talking about two different things...

Default You are probably right, they are just for location purposes, it is a long ...

time since I did the heads on my 12v.

I did a Peugeot head at around the same time so I think it may have been that which used one of the head-bolt holes as an oil feed with a sleeve of about ½" inch in diameter.
