here's just some reasons I read proponents think it's a great idea...
Nitrogen filled tires will last longer, provide increased safety, better fuel efficiency, and reduces operating costs.
Maintain proper inflation pressure longer:
Tires inflated with compressed air lose 2 psi/month. It takes up to 6 months or more for the same loss with nitrogen
Improve fuel efficiency
Properly inflated tires provide a 3.3% increase in miles/gallon
Eliminate chemical aging of the tire
As oxygen permeates through the side wall, it degrades the rubber, causing the tire to deteriorate. Nitrogen is inert and prolongs tire quality
Longer tire life
By maintaining proper inflation pressure and minimizing tire aging, tire life improves by up to 25%
Nitrogen is very dry (-50°F dewpoint)
Nitrogen eliminates condensation and rim corrosion, and will allow tires to run cooler and provide a safer ride
Prevent autoignition of the tire
Tires running cooler will minimize autoignition, providing a safer ride
Increase retreadability
As nitrogen minimizes the oxidation of the rubber, the tire retains its original quality longer, providing more retreads

Re: "Prevents autoignition of the tire". Excuse me?
Sometimes from under-inflation etc tires will burst and almost catch on fire, they smoke like a chimney at a minimum. Not sure if this is what that is referring to, or heat from doing burnouts/locked wheels during braking etc.
I have nitrogen filled tires on a couple of my cars, but I top them up with regular air from my compressor.

Funny, since our air is ~79% nitorgen, there really isn't any benefit to switching to 100%...
nitrogen gas. There have been several studies of whether pure nitrogen filled tires are better. From what I can recall, there is no significant benefit(s) in replacing standard air with nitorgen in tires. For racing, which results in extreme heat, nitrogen may benefit due to its slightly improved thermal conductivity over air. But for the normal average driver, a waste of $$s.

Nope. Forget it...
I tried that (called "Reifengas" here in Germany) a few years ago on my winter tires. I bought really high-quality Continentals, wanted to treat them best possible... I used them one winter and after the next summer two of them lost quite a lot of their pressure. After refilling with "normal" air they lasted longer...
So in my personal opinion it's not better than air. If there IS any difference, after my experiences it's even worse...

it does help, a small amount. we fill all our new cars with nitrogen during PDI
this is done partly because all new cars have a tire pressure monitoring system. it used to be very common for a customer to return to the dealership 1wk after purchase, screaming because "a light is on, this car is a lemon." it would just be their tire pressure light, usually on a very cold morning in the fall. nitrogen helps us avoid that...
i run it in my track tires, and notice that the pressures are more consistent before/after sessions.

There are some benefits, no moisture in the tire will help keep the inside of the rim from oxidising and there is less expansion of the gas during high tempratures....that is why they fill aircraft tires with Nitrogen
