My 95-A6 had the Audi/Bose system and I replaced it with an indash Blaupunkt AM/FM/CD/MP3 player. Bought the unit new on eBay for $150 and have had zero regrets.
I posted very detailed directions on how to to his on this board about 18 months ago. If you search around you should be able to find my post. It basically has the details on the pin-outs of the existing stereo and how to construct a connector that works.
Getting a new head unit isn't for everyone but it works best for me. I wasn't crazy about the existing radio (poor reception) and the CD changer would cost more than a whole new unit.
