Default Autofrost R-12 replacement?

I remember a discussion a while back on the Autofrost R-12 replacement, GHG R-406A. I don't remember if it really worked, or what the cost/difficulty was with the conversion.

Anybody have any experience with this stuff? My AC has not been charged since 1994, and is finally empty. Could someone with no AC experience do the conversion? Do any shops do it?

Depends if you have the equipment to first find the leak(s), then replace the broken part(s), then draw a vacuum and then finally refill the system.

No, using something other than freon will mess up a shop recovery system.

Default You can have your R-12 feon system legally recharged only by a licensed tech. If you want to...

convert the system, the freon you should use is R-134a. But the conversion could be fairly costly to replace the compressor, evaporator, condensor, and hoses in your 13-yr old car. Your best bet and least costly is have it fixed and re-charded with R-12 by an experienced A/C tech who has the proper equipment, knowledge, and the freon.

Default Duracool

Since the car isn't worth much, and it doesn't get too hot here in New England (light interior + sunroof), I'm willing to experiment. I just ordered the Duracool recharge kit (similar to Autofrost), and will have the freon drained by a licensed tech. I will post full costs/results when its all done.
