Default Automatic Trans Fluid Service

Here's how I serviced my transmission.

<a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a6100/msgs/53625.phtml">Click here</a>

It's also located in the Audi 100/A6 (C4 92-97) FAQ Digest.

Default You forgot to mention the Vaseline on the filter O-ring. Not measuring the ATF temp is bad.

The engine should be running when you do the final fill too.

It sounds like your transmision fluid may be about one liter low now.

Isn't a flush done through the tranny cooler? I'll do that next time.

Default Ditto. The proper procedure for filling the tranny is when the ATF is 35-40 degrees C, the fluid...

is at the correct level when it just dribbles out of the fill port on the side of the pan when the car is running in "P", all accessories off. As Seattle Scott says, you probably are 1/2 - 1 liter low.

2nd. Temp is important, and level is checked with car running.

Default O-Ring & Temp

I lubricated the O-ring with trans fluid before installing.

Regarding the temp, I know the manual says to make sure the temp is 35-40 degrees C, however, I don't have the full VAG-COM and the freeware version wouldn't give me the trans temp. So, I assumed that if the engine and trans are at normal operating temperature, that would be sufficient.

I measured the amount of fluid I pumped into the trans, 2.5 liters. From posts here, the amount for a service should be 2.7 liters. So I'm pretty close. Next time, I'll check the level with the engine running in Park.

Thanks for your comments.

I'm going to do one more service after about 1K miles. Then I'll do the full flush through using the trans cooler lines a while later.

Default Having engine idle at final fill is more important. I measured ATF temperature with my hand.

Body (37C) temperature on pan. Later when I had access to my laptop w/VAGCOM I checked the fluid level again. At 40C ATF temperature the ATF level was perfect.

Normal operating temperature is too hot. On my 97 I need about 3.5 liters to do the job.
