Default Battery choices - FYI

Just bought new battery for 97A6QA. I ended up buying one from dealer for $120, becuase the ones that came up on the Interstate and Sears sites were clearly unsuitable. If you put 97A6 into the Sears battery search menu, they recommend the Internaional ($100). Problem is that that battery is 12 inches long and would not fit in the space under the seat. Also, the vent hole is on the long side, exactly where the battery clamp holds the side of the battery. So much for Sears. The Interstate site recommends the Megatron ($115), which is short enought (11") to fit the space, but also has the vent on the side where it would interfere with the clamp. Both sides have secondary recommendations, but they are all batteries with unprotected positive terminals sticking out of the top. The people who put these recommendations into the battery search engines obviously do not bother to actually check out the cars in question.
The Audi battery only has 570 CCA, whereas the Sears and Interstate ones have up to 800, but the old Audi battery never gave me any trouble on that score. Unless you live in Alaska, I would imagine 800 CCA is wasted.

Default My OEM battery exploded one day, and I couldn't get fired up

about paying over $100 for a replacement from the dealer. I bought a vented VW battery that had the same size box, same terminals and same CCA as stock for $35 at Costco. 150,000 miles later, it still works.

I used water in winter (instead of antyfreeze). I drained whater every night and filled in the morning with a bucket of boiling water. It warmed oil in the engine block.

PS this is bad advice for aliminium block engines. On the other side, if you use 0W30 oil and keep battery in a good shape, I am sure, Audi will start without problems.

Default Sorry, it was a long time ago. I couldn't locate the receipt.

I just went to Costco with some notes and a tape measure.
