Default Big tranny problems!!

When the car is shifted from park to drive, the tranny doesnt catch until 3000 RPM. On the other hand. I am able to manualy shift from park to first, second, third and into drive (fourth). As soon as i stop and the cars automatically shifts back to neutral the problem persists. Any ideas????????

Default So the car will drive, but......

it goes into neutral when you stop. Are you sure it's neutral and not 3rd gear? Does the car engage all of the gears when you shift through manually? From my experience- get the codes read. It could be a problem with the solenoids which control shifting. But, you need to get the codes read, if there is a problem, there will be a code there. Mine did a similiar thing, would have to shift it manually to get it to work. good luck.

Default Definatly get codes, but make sure they are read by a qualified Audi tech or better yet

go to a qualified ZF transmission specialist. Getting it diagnosed correctly will save you a lot of headachs and money waisted.

My guess is it could be a bad connection to the mulitfunction switch or a bad switch alltogether.

Follow the link to find a ZF machanic in your area...<ul><li><a href="http://www.zf.com/na/defaultz.asp?lang=1&amp;id=220">http://www.zf.com/na/defaultz.asp?lang=1&amp;id=220</a</li></ul>

Default Re: Big tranny problems!!

I had the car looked at by a local Audi mechanic that I have had very good luck with in the past. He said there were no codes to be found and that I need a new transmission at the cost of about $4000 +. I trust his word, but how can there be NO codes found??

Any further advice from this forum would be greatly appreciated. The car is a 96 A6 2.8 quattro and the tranny catches at 3k rpm's from a dead stop when in "drive" with a large "thunk", yet I can manually shift the tranny from 1st all the way up and it works fine.

Should I keep manually shifting the car until it completely dies as I don't have $4000 to spend on a new tranny. Would a filter/fluid change be worth a shot?

Default Filter/Fluid change is always worth a shot....

it'll probably run you $50 if you do it yourself, maybe less. You can always get a used tranny, or one already rebuilt. Much less that way. You can find a used one at the link below. Personally- if you can drive it,keep going. I think it's wierd that you can shift it manually. Good Luck.<ul><li><a href="http://www.car-part.com">http://www.car-part.com</a</li></ul>

Default Audi dealers don't know transmissions!! Like I said before...

ZF is the manufacturer of your transmission and you should get it diagnosed by a ZF trained specialist (follow the link I gave you below). Audi dealers are not trained to do transmission work. The dealer will not open up a transmission to fix anything, they will only replace the entire unit.

If you can shift it manually then the transmission shouldn't be bad! I agree with dj_dc, you should defiantly change the fluid/filter. Keep us posted on what you find out.

Default Re: Definatly get codes, but make sure they are read by a qualified Audi tech or better yet

I've almost the same problem. I just bought this 1991 Audi 100 last Christmas. 3 months later, it started with 3rd shifting at 3000rpm. Then gearing down to 2nd gear when slowing down or coming to a full stop and wouldn't shift up when I accelerate. Uneless I turn off the engine, put it in park then start it up again and it would drive fine till the next stop. I got the codes NOW WHAT? AAMCO got the codes for me but they told me I should take it to an audi mechanic, something I can't afford right now. Any help will be appreicated.

Codes are:-

00281 VSS

00518 TPS (G69)

00529 Engine speed

00299 Trans Range Program

00263 Mechanical Malfunction
