Hi all!
My A/C isn't working...hasn't since I've owned this car..I asked my mechanic "friend" what could be wrong with it (it's a 1992 100) and he said it'd have to be changed to a R134A system since R12 is way too expensive to use (?). But I thought A/C systems could be "recharged"? If I take it to him, he will probably want to do the R134A upgrade..
(I know nothing, really, about air conditioing..)
What should I do??

I am not sure about the type of the refregerant in your system (in 1996 it is R134A). But your friend is right. It would be the same to fill R12 or to retrofit to R134A and then fill will R134A. If the refregerant gone - you have to look for a leak.
BTW are you sure, that refregerant gone? Can you check the ODC codes?

smuggled into the US. Cocaine was first.
Anyway, an R134A upgrade may be cheaper than an R12 recharge. Call up another auto shop or two and get some prices.

is that it is usually a complete changeover, including compressor (runs higher pressures) lines, dryer, etc. It's pricey. Usually $1,000 plus. I've had good and bad luck with R12 repairs...it is a bit of a gamble.

Hmmm...when I had it in the shop 6 months or so ago, they checked the codes and didn't mention finding any A/C problems.. When I got the car, it was WINTER, so I couldn't tell if it worked or not. (I didn't think it did)..
So...either way, I'm looking at about a $1000???? Yikes!!!
