I wanted to pass some info that I found along about the stale smell that comes from the vents. After a search I realized that my '95 A6 didn't have a cabin filter and found that a solution was to spray Lysol in the fresh air intake. I was going to do so but asked myself why does this car stink but by '93 corrado fine? I decided to open the fresh airbox and have a look. I found four soaked moldy napkins, a dollar bill half deteriorated and plenty of leaves. The napkins and bill came from the glove box.
When you kick the recirculation mode the flap open into the cabin near the glove box. If you have a full box with light items...in they go!!!

I'm hoping the smell won't be as noticable without anything there. I cleaned out all the muck at the bottom from the mixture of leaves and condensation.

The under hood part comes off with three or four hand clips. The intake in the cabin is under the glove box and only works in "Recirculation Mode" so the AC compressor has to be running (in my car, most likley yours too).
The red strip is sort of where the outside air gets sucked in.

The airbox is exactly where Seattle Scott indicates but the opening is slightly behind the mark shown in red. If you remove the three screws indicated in red it will allow access to the chamber. It is not easy to get a vacuum into that spot without removing the windshield cowling. To do so:
Remove the two caps off the wipers and then remove the two 13mm nuts. Lift the wipers off the splined/tappered spindle (with some force). Remove the four 7mm allens that hold the windsheild cowling and then remove the cowling itself. Now you can remove the 2nd cowling or drip tray which will allow easier access with a vacuum nozzle to the air box. The fresh air is pulled through the opening in the back (the orange arrow) and if you pull the plunger inwards then you should see the interior passanger floor mat. That is the recirculation mode. If anyone would like I can post instructions about the procedure to get to the inside of the box to remove the lower 'sludge'.
Seattle Scott, I hope you don't mind the editing of your original photo! Thanks

Your wish is my command! Besides it lets me play with my new Digital Cam. My wife hates when I take the cars apart for no reason but I LOVE IT!

I must have the same issue. Previous owner lived in a fairly wooded area and getting into the car in the morning you would swear that you just stepped into the forest on a damp cool morning to the smell of decaying leaves, etc. Great post - now I have a project for this weekend.
