Default can the voltage regulator be tested seperate from the alternator?

I searched- but couldnt find. Also someone mentioned a diode pack and an exciter circuit- are they part of the regulator?? (actually a kind e-mail from someone on AW)

This all relates to my need to rev to 2100 to get the thing charging- after that it will charge at idle...

Default I'm guessing it can. My tech thinks my voltage

reg is bad so I assume they can go bad separately and thus be checked. I'll find out today.
