Default cannot communicate with OBD I

Audi 1994 100 S
My mechanic used the "Retriever" scan tool, and he could connect to the obd computer (the cost of the tool is $800). Another mechanic used the vag-com software/tool from ross-tech, and could connect to the obd. i wanted something cheap, so:
1. Bought the obd-II cables off ebay (with 2x2 connector), and tried using the vag-com software from ross-tech, but could not communicate with the computer. I thought maybe the 2x2 connector was bad
2. Bought a handheld scanner (geniscan 200) off ebay (with a new 2x2 connector), still could not connect to the obd. got an error message that implied no communication with the obd computer.
3. checked the obd pins, and they have one wire going into each of the pins (4 in total), so any vag-com tool should work.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Pradeep

Default I went thru this recently on my 1992

I build an adapter using a OBDII connector I harvested from the junkyard. A local Audiworlder's VAGCOM software could access my ECU and TCU, but not my airbag controller. In essence, it was no better than the VWTOOL software I have. (my goal was to reset the airbag light.)

I'll be watching this thread with great interest.

Default In 1992 the air bag controller connectors may be in the center console separate from the others.

Did you look? Check Bentley?

Default Try this..... Buy a genuine Ross-Tech interface instead of cheap eBay garbage. Great investment.

Not only will it work flawlessly and allow much more functionality..... They actually support their products very well, and will solve any problem you happen to encounter.
