Yesterday, it was like in the low teens here...wife starts driving the A6 98...
drive around 1 block...hears a "thud" and the car stalls....
None of the gears work except the reverse...
Since the car was kind enuf to work in reverse I had a chance to park next to the side walk and get it towed....
For once I saw the "all the gear shift indicator lights on"....
all the other times I turned the car on and off it did not show anything different....but all the while the car would hardly move except in "reverse gear"
I did not get a chance to pull the codes with my personal VAG.... and just had it towed to the garage....
Any ideas ?

third gear as a default forward gear. It leaves you reverse as well though. Anyway search the forum about limp mode. I and many others have/had this problem. This is why I will not buy an older Audi with an auto tranny.
Also, if this happens in the future. Unplug the battery and it will likely reset the trans computer and temporarily "fix" the problem and save you tow exspenses.

Is there a long term, "permanent" fix.
Also since this is a wagon the battery is in the rear seat...never tried unplugging and pluggin it.
Thnks for the reply.

Hint: It could be a bad wire connection, rpm sensor, trans computer, water in the footwell(wehre computer is stored). You are going to need to do some diagnostic work...
