Cd changer help
The CD Changer on my 1997 A6 needs repair. It is a 6-disk cd changer and will change through the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th CDs. The 5th and 6th will not work and shows CD Err on the screen. If I remove the magazine, and reinsert it, it will play, but only through the 1-4 cds. Does anyone know what might be wrong? Anyone know of any cheap places to have it repaired in the Los Angeles area? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

IHMO: solder another audio input in paralel to the CD changer.
look at the archives on how to attach iPod to A8 for example. It much better to have your iPod (or any other player) in the car, then CD changer in the trunk.
Trying to repair your CD changer is the waste of money.

Re: Cd changer help
Inside there is a platform that moves up and down to each CD to get it out of the cartridge and move it down to where the player is. It is possible that something is jammed in there so it is not allowing that platform to move to the last 2 cds. It is not difficult to open the changer and watch what is happening. Just unscrew the small black screws that hold the case on. Also check the cartrige to make sure the white levers for each section are working smoothly. You should be able to push them manually and make the CDs pop out. If you decide that it is not fixable let me know. My changer has a gear that is broken and I would be willing to buy it for the parts. To answer your other question, if you have the Delta HU with the 8-pin changer (I think that was standard on a 97) there are no other CD changers that will plug and play.

Alpine on the 1997s
But they use a proprietary interface with the Audi Delta radio so are not swappable with off-the-shelf changers. There aren't many options available to owners of 97's and older. You'll probably have to find a replacement from a wrecking yard or get lucky on eBay.
There is a place out of the U.K. that advertises a replacement unit for your vintage A6. Perhaps a forum member from the U.K. can comment on it?

http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product.asp?product=19777</a

Thanks everyone! I'll try to take the cover off and see what's the problem.
I like the iPod idea and will definitely do it (when I get an iPod), but still also like to keep the CD player. Does the iPod adaptor allow for the CD changer and the iPod to be hooked up at the same time? Or must you unplug it manually to switch between the two? Judging by the pictures, I didn't think so. Again, thanks for all the help guys!

Vintage Changers are seen on Ebay in Germany (where I am located) presently. Track category 38753 and watch out for the HUGE Audi logo on the changer.
