Default Changed Broken Ignition Switch 1996 A6!!

Hi! Thanks to this forum, I was able to execute the switch change Flawlessly in about 30 minutes. COntribution from the forum were perfect. In my analysis of the broken switch... the spring itself broke the plastic casing and caused me all the grief. Switch Bought from Clair Parts for about $27 and the dealer wanted $300 to do the whole job. THANKS!! Guys

Good work, Maini ! If you haven't yet, be sure to get a Bentley- It will pay for itself

Default Do you have a link to a thread with instructions/hints?

I'm facing the same repair myself (since my '97 isn't covered under the recall even though it's the same switch).

Default Didn't find any actual instructions

Searched 100-A6 forums, came up with 36 results, but no instructions.

Default Replace the ignition switch:

Follow Beep-beep's procedure to remove the dash. Link below. Remove the two screws under the instrument panel. remove the shelf. Take out the instrument panel, there are three screws, just unplug everything and remove it from the car, it can only go back together one way (except the wiring harnesses are attached to the dash assbly w/a zip tie, unzip tie it with a small flat blade). Watch out for the two small light bulbs, make sure you get them back in correctly (actually, mine were color coded).
Be really careful with the dash. I had to do the beep-beep dash light repair afterwards and also lost one tach light??? Related? I don't know.
Unplug the ignition switch, it just pulls off, and there are two small screws on either side of the plastic switch, they go down and are under the red plastic paint, loosen them and the assembly slides out and the new one slides in (very small flat blade to unscrew). I spend at least an hour looking at it, trying to figure out which part matched the one in my hand that I was going to replace it with and where were those two damn screws (under some plasticized red paint). Actually, I think I could do it now in not over 1/2 hour, and without unpluging the dash assbly, but this is now, and that was then.
Sit back, drink your favorite beverage and think about the $180 you just saved.

Default Thanks a lot

Now I just have to find a Radio Shack or similar that carries the temp display bulbs so I don't have to do this twice.
