Default Changing Head Gasket

Does anyone know how hard it would be to change the head gasket in a 1995 A6 front wheel drive. Or could tell me how or direct me to a book for assistant. I had it done a year ago and it went out again. The company I had do it charged me then 1800.00 and know wants to charge me another 1300.00 I would rather lean it myself. If anyone could help I would appreciate it.

Default I don't know what they did but that's rediculus...

If they replaced the gasket and did it right it should last at least 150k-200k. Unless you overheated the car or used phosphate based coolant. My car had it changed at 70k by a very reputable shop in MI (previous owner payed) and I'm at 150k now and no signs of it going bad. I think you might want to talk to them and explain to you how a brand new non-defective gasket goes bad after 60k. Your original one went bad becuase from what i remeber they were 2 weak. The replacement one's audi had were updated- much more ridgid ones.

actually the first time it was changed it was 116,000 I know only have 137,000 so I only got 21,000 miles on the new gasket. I also had the time belt changed, water pump, bearing, vallet gasket, valve cover, deflection pulley, thermostat, EX bolt, EX Nut, Spark plugs. And I'm not sure what type of Coolant they put in. However thats alot of work to have done and know have this blown head gasket. Concerning over heating I never seen my gauge go up it never seem to over heat.

Default Were the heads checked for warpage? If a head(s) was warped, that would cause a...

head gasket(s) to fail very quickly.

Well, white blue gray smoke with coolant out of my tail pipes (it was all over my back panel). I have like bubbles in my oil. And my coolant drain from my radiator?

Same problem. I had the head bolts replaced with the first HG job. I don't recall the miles but wasn't more than 20K before it failed. The original head gaskets were laminated, that is, at least 2 layers of metal with gasket material in between. The replacement gasket was not laminated and failed. The last gasket was like the original and has held up just fine. I used new headbolts the last time as well. I'm curious to know what style of head gasket was used on your car.
