Default Changing out the Gamma radio

Hi.

I just bought a new replacement radio. It claims to have "ISO Anschluss" or an ISO connector for the wiring. Is there a way to interface that connector with the connector on the wiring harness for my 92 100 combi (non bose)?

The ISO connector looks like this:
_________________
GR | __ |MEM | __ |
+ |ANT | __ | __ |
_________________|
LR- | LF- | RF- | RR- |
LR+| LF+| RF+| RR+|
___|____|____|____|

Apparently in the Audi wiring there is only one ground wire for the speakers? I'm confused. I haven't pulled the Gamma out yet becasue I don't know my code.

All help appreciated.

Thanks!

Default this is the diagram on the top of gamma radio

<center><img src="http://members.aol.com/bluemaxww1/gammaradiodiagram.jpg"></center><p>you can pull out the radio w/o disconnecting the wiring. Then you can ask the Audi service for the code. Or you can take it in and remove it in front of him, just pull out enough to get serial number for him.

Default Thanks! That's just what I needed!

But looking at the data plate it appears that the outputs are line level? Is that true?

I don't have Bose, so I thought I was getting speaker level outputs The label says something about line level. I'd better go pull my radio and have a look...

Thanks again for the picture!

Default Looking at the wiring diagram, it appears there are common grounds...

In the bottom larger connector, COM looks like common ground for the fronts.

Is RC the common ground for the rears therefore?

The radio I bought does not have common grounds. Is it possible to convert the new radio over to use common grounds?

Even better, is it possible to seperate the grounds in the car's wiring harness? I really don't want to rewire my car if I don't have to but getting good sound is more important than keeping it factory original. If I convert the car to match ISO-Anschluss(connections), then I could slip in any ISO compatible radio and be good to go, so maybe I should explore going that way.

Infortunately, I have not received my Bentley manual yet, so I con't go very deep into the wiring harness in the car, thus all of my questions.

Thanks! for the help!

Default Avant Owners: Wiring color code from the connectors on the gamma radio

I went out and pulled the radio out of the car to have a look at what the wiring looked like. I snapped a pic (attached) of the label describing the connections on the radio.

http://hembrook.com:8080/automotive/audi/100/gamma.jpg

I then looked at the color codes of the wires and created a table in similar order to what the label on the radio itself has.

<pre>
Bottom Black Connector
________________________________
Brown |White/Blue |Red |N/C |
________________________________|
Red/Blue |White-White|N/C |Blue/White|
________________________________|

Black Connector
________________
N/C|Blue|Yellow|N/C|
________________|
N/C|Gray|Green|N/C|
________________|

Red Connector
______________________________
Red|White|N/C |N/C |N/C |
______________________________|
N/C|N/C |Purple-Brown|Yellow|Purple|
______________________________|
</pre>

SO it looks like the front speakers (Vorne Links[VL], Vorne Rechts [VR]) are powered by the radio (20W) from the middle black connector, and the rear speakers (Hinter Links [HL], Hinter Rechts [HR]) are powered by the line level outputs from the red connector.

That would mean that there are amps for the rear speakers hidden somewhere in the car, correct?

The plot thickens.

Default What kind of harness did you get?

How does it interface with your car's wiring?

Default Circuit City has them

It's a harness made by Metra(?!), fits vw's 87 and up. It plugs into the two short connectors and leaves the long connector(with data, etc.) untouched. What comes out is a bunch wires that are clearly labeled and correspond well to the wires sticking out of the aftermarket stereo. (I did not have the harness for the aftermarket stereo so i had to do some splicing.) BTW, my radio was a non-bose so yours might be different. HTH

Default The Audi factory wiring is most of an ISO set... also, where is the amplifier?

The ISO wiring setup for euro cars has two 8-pin connector blocks. These handle power (typically black) and the 4 speakers driven by the radio's internal amp (on a brown connector). The index tabs are offset differently between the two connectors so you don't cross-connect them.

The Audi Gamma wiring adds a third (red) connector block with 10 pins. This handles the preamp outputs to the rear speakers as well as the data interface to the LCD in the dashboard.

The new radio I bought has the two ISO standard blocks. They will interface with the Audi anschluss (connectors) for the front speakers and the power connections without any changes necessary.

The active rear speakers I will have to deal with seperately, using the RCA preamp outputs from the new stereo. I'll have to splice up a connector block with a cut up patch cable and interface them from the RCA connectors to a 8-pin ISO block. This will mate with a 8-pin block which I will plug in the connectors from the red connector, minus the connectors for the data stream to the dashboard display. I'm also going to seperate the ground connectors (instead of using common ground) so I can keep the preamp grounds seperate in the new radio.

Thus I hope to interface it all.

A question: Where is the amp for the rear speakers in the 100 located? If I could bypass it, I could then hook up the rear door speakers directly to my radio's speaker level outputs and bypass all of this mess.

Maybe later I'll add a 8" subwoofer to the rear floor of the avant (see post in the Audio forum) with its own amp (crossed over from the rear speakers, to make their life easier) and rethink how things work here.

Thanks for the input (pun intended)!

Default This is the deal

The front speakers are line level and the rears use amps that are mounted to the woofers in the rear doors (avant). Here is the hookup:
red - switched +
white - ant booster (connect to power ant booster)
red/blue - constant +
brown - ground
green - front right + speaker
yellow - front right - speaker
grey - front left + speaker
blue - front left - speaker
brown - right rear - speaker (pre-out)
violet - left rear - speaker (pre-out)
white - right rear + speaker (pre-out)
red -left rear + speaker (pre-out)
BE CAREFUL-Audi uses the same color for multiple things. You will have to solder male RCA jacks onto the rear speaker wires in order to connect them to the new radio. The white wire for the antenna booster has to be connected-it also turns on the rear amps. Good luck!
