Default Check Engine Light- No code?

Hello all-
New forum member longtime Audi owner. I own a 1996 A6 2.8. I have a persistent check engine light and my OBDII scanner says there are no codes present. I can reset the light by disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes. The light will stay out for a day or three and then it's back on. So my question is, do I need another scanner or do I have a bad ECU? Or???? Car runs fine, everything works as it should. Any help would be appreciated!! I tried to search, but could not find anything quite like I have and I am search challenged anyway.

Thanks!

A generic scanner won't read all of the VAG DTCs. You really need VAG–COM to diagnose the CEL.
