clunk sound when put in reverse!!

clunk sound when put in reverse!!
Hi I have a 97 A6 quattro wagon and when I put the car in reverse I always hear a clunk/metal sound coming from under neath the car.. there is no problem driving the car in reverse or in drive. Also I've noticed its alot harder and harsher when the car is parked on a hill and I put it in reverse! any idea what this could be?
