How the heck does the wood trim piece come off around the auto gear shift selector? I am afraid to break it by not knowing how the piece is actually mounted. Does it pry off? From the front/toward the dash or from the rear? How about the sides?

As you look at the trim, there is enough of a gap to get something underneath between the the black plastic center trim piece and the wood trim.
I use my fingers or a teflon "bone" used for body work, but you can use just about anything else as long as you're careful.
Pry along the back, and once it pops free lift the rear about an inch and slide back to clear the front tabs.
