Default Control arm bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends.....

I have to replace the shocks on my 94 100CSq. Wile I am in there I would also like to change out anything that needs it. I have not been able to locate info in the Bentley on how to check the ball joints, control arm bushings, or tie rod ends. Are these typical parts that need to be replaced in the front suspension?

What are common parts that should be checked/replaced in the rear suspension?

Default In the FAQ I have posted the list of the parts, shop recomended to replace while working on suspen.

I think there are bushings, etc.

I think, you can inspect the rod ends and see, if you need to replace them.

Default strut cartridges, etc

first, you don't have to take anything apart underneath to change cartridges. this can be done from up top and the car should sit on the wheels until you are done.

to check tie rod ends, put you hand on the end, have someone slightly move steering wheel back and forth. if you feel movement between the rod end and where it connects to the strut, it is bad.

to check ball joints, raise car and use a longish bar or 2x4 to gently lift up on wheel. put your hand right in there on the boot of the ball joint. you should be able to see or feel up and down movement if the ball is bad.

if it is bad, you need the whole control arm, as the ball is part of it. expect to pay about $100 to 150 per arm. the arm should come with inner bushings and outer (sway bar bushings)

if the ball is good check the sway bar bushings for rusty crumbly stuff around the rubber. if pieces of it fall out with your fingers or a screw driver, chances are it is bad. not too hard to change the sway bar bush.

the inner bushing is harder to check because you can't get the weight or tension of the car off it. use a screw driver and see if you can move the round, inner part of the control arm around or back and forth.

to change the inner bushing, the arm has to come off. you can drill, cut, etc and get the old bushing out, but a new one must be pressed in with a hydraulic press at a shop, unless you have your own press. (a big hammer and a steel block are not a substitute for a hydraulic press)

i just did strut cartridges, inner and outer bushings, and upper strut mount on my 92 100. not too hard a job. it seems like i wrote something up on it a few weeks ago.
