Default coolant leak (water pump gone?)

i seem to have a small coolant leak coming from around the bottom of the oil pan, worryingly close to the water pump... i noticed a drip coming off one of the bolts that holds the water pump on, so thats why i think its down that way. are the water pumps generally pretty reliable? i havent really heard of them going bad like the ps pumps, but is it probably the culprit, or might there be something else down there leaking?

Default Chance of a broken watr pump, most likely

if you srr water where you are saying there is, the chances are very good the water pump is gone, don't even bother just replace the water pump it is so much cheaper than a new engine. Do it ASAP

Default Water pumps should be changed every 60k with the timing belt...

...sometimes they go out before the 60k mark...some make it past the 60k mark.

Default Water pump is located up top, just below the power steering pump.

But it does sound like the water pump is leaking.

They have a weep hole so when the seal goes bad, they'll leak coolant so that you're aware of the problem and get it replaced before the bearings fail and the waterpump grenades. Pretty handy little feature.

I just helped some friends with a bad water pump in their '96 Land Rover Discovery (what a POS). No weep hole, so they finally discovered the failed water pump when the shaft had about 1/2" of play, the bearings were so loud you could hear them above the engine noise, and it started slinging coolant out the end of the shaft and all over the engine compartment. When they saw all the steam and the temp needle approaching the red, they decided it was probably time to see what was going on!

Default Re: Water pumps should be changed every 60k with the timing belt...

from the state of the rest of the car, i would be surprised if the car has had any of the required services on it... it was in a bad way when i bought it, and i only know the t-belt was done because it looks to be in much better condition than the rest of the car...
