Crank case vent hose
1999 A6 2.8Q 97k miles.
I had the machine in to the Dealer getting a couple of recalls done, and the Service person said I may have a leak in the crankcase vent hose. They wanted $300.00 to fix it. But I wanted to do some research first.
What would be some indications that I had a leak in this hose?
Would this possibly be causing misfiring? The check engine light is on.
How difficult a job is it to replace this hose? I have moderate mechanical skill level.
The Dealer called it a crank case vent hose, but I cannot find the part on the internet.
Any help would be greatly appreacited
Thanks
Tom

But there are two breather hoses on your engine. The P/Ns are 078 103 224 M (or 078 103 224 P, depending on the VIN), and 078 103 223 B, which is the shorter length hose. You should be able to see a cracked hose(s) and oil leakage to detect which hose is in need of replacement. These hoses run from the back end of each valve cover to the throttle body. They are easily removeable with nothing more than your hand, by squeezing the outer ring and pulling off the nozzle. Determine which hose is bad, and either search on-line using these parts numbers to locate one or buy from the dealer and install yourself.

You can sub with a 3/4" piece of heater hose. Although it wont be molded like a factory one, the natural bend/curve in it, will suffice. Especially on the left side. If you find it tight to install, you can lightly lube the inside w/ fresh oil to ease the installation. You'll only need about 10 or so inches so a local autozone will ususally give you a scrap for free.
Good luck
P.S. dont know what the dealer charges for the part, but aftermarket ones I've found are around $60 or so.

The passenger side is most likely where the problem is. It's about $100 from the dealer. While you are in there, change the suction pump and green check value.
FYI to the C4 guys, on the C5, the passenger side vent comes out the front of the head and runs acroos the front of the engine and down the drivers side to the rear. The is a canister built into it.
