Default cross-post: old spark plugs and broken threads

Kinda funny because I am quite prone to this kinda luck.

Basicly I was removing an old spark plug, did the three before it no problem, nothing felt different.

Pulled the spark plug out and oddly enough.. that plug had no threads

So yeah, the threads are still in, checked with a flashlight. The plug looked really warn, almost as if it was skipped over durring the 60k...

My guess is there is probably little I can do myself, what am I in for as far as getting it out?

Is it stripped or broken? Probably a used head anyway or a helicoil.

Default Yikes. You mean *just* the threads are left in?

As in, you've got a plug with the cylinder that would normally have threads on it, but that cylinder is stripped of threads? Or the top of the plug twisted off and the threads+cylinder are still in? Either way you've got a situation... I've dealt with many broken off bolts, and usually just drill them out and then sometimes the entire cylinder can be backed out, or it will crumble. Obviously, you don't want shards of metal in your cylinder.

Default the top of the plug twisted off, and threads + cylinder are still in

I have an easy out set, but I don't wanna try drilling the whole thing out in fear of it falling in or damaging the threads on the cylinder.

Odd question, but would it be safe to drive it 5-10miles to the shop with the one plug empty? or am I looking at a tow job?

Default It does not sound VERY BAD

1. The head is not damaged.
2. You can think about ways to get the stub out. Like soak it in W40 fluid, than drill two holes, put two nails and twist it with pliers.
3. You can drive your car to the closest shop. Newertheless I whould put disclaimer on this item.

Good luck with your problem.
BTW what is the brand of the plugs?

Default They were stock replacement NKG's

I am having it towed to the nearest shop to have it worked on. I tried turning it on, and it made a very loud high piched clicking noise every time that clyinder came up for firing... sounded very bad.

So I quickly shut it off, and called a towing company.

Then, I get in my girlfriends car to drive to work.. it cranks twice, fires, almost starts up before dying completely and the battery has no juice.... what a day.

Default What do you think the shop will do? ........

Mr 12V, we are going to try an EZ out. If that doesn't work or we botch the procedure it's head pulling time.

At least it isn't stripped.

Considering you busted a plug, I think it's gonna be bad baby, real bad. Maybe I've lead a sheltered life and this happens all the time.

Got pictures of the busted plug and plugged hole?

Did you call an Audi dealer to see what they have to say?

Default called audi dealer and audi shop

they said they are going to remove the head, and get it out that way.

Tried an easy out, it was a no go.
While I am at it, I am going to have them replace the rest of the plugs. They said no harm done other than the pain to get it removed.
