My cruise does not work at all. Any ideas on this as I have heard it is quite common. Also, my check engine light comes on only when cold outside, does it have a air temp sending unit or something? HELP.

I would check the obvious like fuses and etc. on the cruise control.
I find the cruise-control strange on Audi's. Considering that the "indicator" is animated for things like wiper-fluid and that it displays the radio frequency. It's interesting that there is *NO* indicator that tells you if the cruise-control is engaged or not.
Isn't that a bit strange?

If I just start the car and try to use the cruise it feels like it wants to work but won't hold the throttle enough and the car slows back down. If the car has been running for about 45 minutes it will work. When it first starts working it will hold speed, but you can't use the accelerate feature. After a while it works, but slowly accels. Then after a little while longer you hit the accel button and the car takes off like a bat out of hell.
I wish it would work like that all the time. When I first got the car on the highway I thought the cruise didn't work. Then I tried it again later in the day and it worked. I was like WTF???

My guess is that one of these isn't seated straight. If the "plunger" is "cocked" to the side try spinning the vent upside down...that should fix it.

That is the most common cause for the cruise.
As to your MIL, we need more info. When does it come on?? All the time?? After the car is driven for a few minutes?? At idle??
It would also be helpful if you listed the year of your car!!

I also have a similar problem. Working through the manual's troubleshooter I can't find the vent valve. Thre are minimal diagrams and the ones in the manual have a lot to be desired.
