Has been since I bought the car, but I think it's around time to do something about it.
Must be a vacuum leak somewhere in the line. Can anyone guide me as to which hoses to look at? The engine bay gets pretty intimidating when you don't know what you're doing...heh.
Thanks!

The cruise control on my 1997 A6 didn't work either when I bought it, but everything seemed to be ok. As i drove it on the highway, I kept pressing the cruise switch and after maybe 1-2 weeks and 100-ish presses, it engaged. Very rarely at first, but now it workes alomst on the first switch. I guess if it is not used for a while it may become rusty. Hope that helps.

I've had this problem several times on my A4 1.8TQ. Every time it was a bad turn stalk switch. Costs about $125 for the switch online...and then labor to install.
