here is what the manual says about the code
DTC P1408/17816 is set when an EGR temperature sensor signal below 41 ' F (5 C) is recieved for longer than 45 sec. with Closed Throttle position (CTP) switch open, engine coolent temperature greater than 140' F (60' C ), throttle valve angle less than 42.5' , vehicle speed between 43.5-65 mph (70-105 kl/h) EGR valve duty cycle greater than 50%, engine speed between 1500-3000 RPM and engine load between 16% and 60%.

Could slow to warm up be a problem with erroneous EGR error codes? Given the parameters that was posted on the conditions that need to be met for the code to trigger, engine or water temp was a factor. It does seem a while for the engine to come up to temp. It does eventually and the needle does lay on the first large tick on the gauge where I believe it should be.

I had to break down and take the car in for logistical purposes. The Reg was due to run out at the end of this month and I had to get the emissions done before renewal. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to take care of it myself. So they had to remove the manifold to "do it right" they said in order to clean out the passage. They cleared the P1408 code and found the passage to be clogged. Hopefully that's it and is fixed. I have to drive it for a while but want to renew reg tomorrow and do the emissions then too. So we shall see.

The temp sensor is on the left with two wires connecting to it. The EGR valve is on the right. The long passage between them tee's up into the intake manifold

Here's Doug's photo of the rear of his intake manifold. This a view from the driver's side, rear.
Note the EGR 2 bolt flange, there on the left, and then the pronounced "boss" that the EGR passage runs in, below the oval throttle body port. Then, at the end of that boss, you can see the termination point of the EGR port, and this is where the EGR Temp Sensor is screwed in.
