Default Emergency Brake Problem

In a previous post I mentioned that my emergency brake wouldn't release. It was the cables. The handle released, but the cables were corroded, said the dealer.

That's common, at least it's cheap to fix! The e-brake portion of my rear calipers seized!!

Default My EBrake handle won't pull up, what could be wrong?

I have to park it in gear. What makes me upset is having to shut the car off so I can park in gear to keep it from rolling even if I'm only going to run in somewhere for a few minutes. That means more wear and tear on my starter. Do you think I need a new cable, or could my calipers be stuck or what??? I'm looking for an easy, possible do-it-myself in the driveway on ramps fix.

Default Could be either, but both are easy to fix.....

...just one is more expensive

The easiest way to figure it out is to trace your e-brake cable back to the rear caliper. Find the spring on the caliper that attches to the brake cable. Now, with a screwdriver pry on the spring to see if it will move. Check both calipers to see if they move.

If you can move them with the screwdriver then your cable is probably rusted. If you can't budge either then it's the caliper!!

HTH!!

Scott, It's hard to guess whether it's your calipers or cables. It could be both. It looks like my car has had both problems.
