Default First of two questions: seepage in rear differential

I have some seepage in my rear differential, but my mechanic told me that it wasn't necessary a critical problem as long as I refilled the fluid level every now and then. What is the right kind of fluid to use, and where do I access the diff to put new fluid in?

Default It's probably the side seals leaking...very common.

Keep it topped up or your will ruin your rear diff. Sorry, don't have the fluid spec in front of me!!

Use synthetic gear lube, 75W-90, GL-5, e.g., Amsoil TGR-QT

Default On passenger's side of diff housing, rear of half-shaft "bell housing", see Bentley page ....more..

....39-129. Fill to lower edge of filler hole.

Default Malcolm, can you give me the capacity and grade for rear dif

fluid change on '97 A6q wagon? I was told by some goofball that there was a transmission, transfer case, and front and rear differentials. There is only a transmission and rear differential, correct? I can't see anything else.

Jim
'97 A6qw
Close to current on service

Default Jim, you have a quattro, so you have a transmission, center diff, .....more...>

...front final drive (front diff), and rear final drive (rear diff). So the goofball was right. All 3 use the same fluid, as in the post above. Capacities for the 100 (like mine) are center diff - 2.2 pts., front - 2.2 pts., rear - 3.6 pts., according to the info I have. I believe the A6 should be the same. Bentley says to fill to lower edge of filler hole (all three), and also says to drain and refill these units only is "absolutely" necessary. And get yourself a Bentley manual.
