Default Fix It or Replace It? $4,300 Repair Bill.

I own a '92 100CS Quattro with 92k miles, and I love it. But, the maintenance is killing me. Should I keep dropping money on it, or is it past time to give up on it?

At the moment, I have the following repairs pending:

* Driver's window switch $170
* Fuel line $280
* Cats $1,000 (Replaced twice already with third-party parts. Shop wants to go back to OEM parts and is crediting prior labor and parts.)
* MAF (warranty from prior repair)
* Power steering pump (warranty from prior repair)
* air intake leaking, injector sales, valley pan gasket $730
* serpentine belt cracked, upgraded kit $480
* upper oil pan gaskets, oil cooler seal, oil pump gasket $1,600

This is after having been through the following:

4/01 - Valley pan gasket
10/01 - Valve cover gaskets
11/01 - Valve cover gaskets / head gasket
11/01 - head gasket / remove, machine, and replace heads
12/01 - power steering hose
5/02 - cv boot, vacuum hoses
1/03 - hal sender
2/03 - induction service / fuel pressure regulator diaphram
3/03 - timing belt
10/03 - maf / cats / tailshaft seal
1/04 - O2 sensors, EGR valve and gasket, A/C servo motor
9/04 - power steering pump

And, I'm sure some items I didn't make note of...

Opinions?

Thanks.

Default For a 13-yr old car & $4.3K bill, I say replace it w/ a newer Audi model.....

It appears that your 100CS Quattro w/ only 92K miles may not have been well taken care of since it was new. That's not a lot of miles on that old of a car, so something is not right. If you like the C4 platform, I'd move up to a '96 or '97, the most reliable of this platform. You can find one for $3K-$5K more than your repair bill, probably with a lot less miles (e.g., my '96 A6 FWD Avant only has 54K miles on it, and I've had very few problems).

Actually, I bought it in '93 with 10k miles on it. It was a VW company car prior to that. If there's anything wrong with the maintenance, it happened before I got it. I've been religious about maintenance, trying to avoid just this situation.

Interesting thought on the '96/'97... It's not so much that I love this platform, but I love Audis. And, after driving this one for 12 years, I'm rather accustomed to it.

Thanks.

Keeping this car only makes sense if you DIY.

Default It is a sad situation but unless you can DIY, these repairs do not makes economic sense....

I would suggest trading it for a newer C4 car.

Aim for a 97 quattro if I were you.

Default Some prices seem a tad bit steep

You've replaced both cats twice? Did they melt? That would indicate a different problem and going back to OEM cats wouldn't solve it.

As for the gaskets & belts, the prices seem to be about double what my wrench would charge.

It's hard for me to think an Audi with less than 100K would be dead. But I feel your pain nonetheless. Good luck.
