Default Fuel Pump

How bad is it if the fuel pump remains working after the ignition has been switched off? Why does this happen? When it does it usually shuts off after a few minutes but today I have to put the key in the ignition and turn it half way then it shut off. Its an 1992 Audi 100 2.8L V6.
