Default harmonic balancer position?

First, this in not about the pulley with the timing mark. I know the notch must align for the timing mark. The pulley has two parts. One is the outside part which goes up against the crank. It has the notch to align with the crank shaft and has the ribbed belt grooves.

The inner part (heavier) is the actual harmonic balancer. I don't remember it coming apart the last time I had it off, but now I am holding two pieces and I can't tell where it was relative to the outer pulley.

My thinking is this doesn't have a default position, but it is a balancer. In the old days of chevy V8s the engine builders would do some final balance by drilling here and there on the harmonic or flywheel.

What i wonder is if the factory Audi people do anything relative to balancing. My engine has that typical vibration around 2K rpm. Hey here's an idea. I could mark it put in on, put everything else on, run the engine. Then, take everthng else apart and repeat the process 8 times until the engine ran smoother. NOT!!!!!!!

So, bottom line, is the balancer just a hunk of metal with no specific placement or is there some mark I am missing?

Default Per the Bentley Manual, the notch in the vibration damper is to be aligned w/ the tab on the...

toothed (serpentine) belt sprocket.
