Noticed at speeds over 35mph. When the car is put in neutral while at speed (with engine at idle), the noise is still there, so I believe it is not the trans, or engine. Is this noise a tell tale sign of something? Has anyone had a similar problem...could it be a wheel bearing or some differential problem? I know it is impossible to know where or what the sound is from over the web, but with a car so smooth and quiet...this howl is extremely annoying! Any ideas would be great...thanks

It could be the alternator. Mine started singing right before it went out. The only difference is that I could here it at any speed. Sounds like some bearing is going.

The noise comes and goes w/ speed...it is the loudest at around 65-70mph...has anyone replaced a wheel bearing before..if so how much should I expect to pay?

Some people have had problems with there input shaft bearing wearing on there tranny/diffs. This exhibts the EXACT same symptoms that you are explaining. (i.e...It's releated to wheel speed, clutch-in makes NO difference, etc...)
I know one person on the 80/90 forum that let the worn bearing go so long that it also took out his tranny. You need to get it checked immediatley.
I hope I'm wrong...Good Luck!!

I am having the car looked at tomorrow, so I hope they can find the problem...What you are describing may be the problem...While driving to work this morning, The noise seems to be from the left front, but still not sure...I HOPE it is only a wheel bearing...but they should last longer than 100K? Do you have anymore info on the shat input bearing? I would like to give the tech. something to go off of...thanks Todd

when I took the car to lunch, I noticed that the noise gets louder when the car is turning to the right (while in motion)...I would guess it is the wheel bearing...I truely hope so, cuz the input shaft bearing (if it is bad), sounds F***in expensive!

...it's just safer to get it looked at now. For more info do a search in the 80/90 forum on "input shaft bearing".
Again, hopefully I'm wrong!!
