Default High pitched sound on acceleration at various speeds

Okay, it hasn't gone away, so I thought I'd ask here.

I've noticed that when I'm going around 60 MPH or 30-40 MPH, and I'm on the accelerator lightly, I hear a high pitched sound that seems as if it's coming from the engine bay. However, when I move my head around in the car, it's harder to tell where it's coming from.

Also, I'm still not sure whether it's a whistling sound (indicating an air leak somewhere), or a screeching sound (indicating a mechanical grinding). But if I take my foot off the accelerator, it goes away.

I can't tell if it's at a certain RPM range or not, but I'd venture to guess that it's around 2800 or 3000 RPM. I'll pay attention to it on my lunch break today, if I remember.

Any ideas anyone? Would this be caused by the (now infamous) leaking throttle body? As I said, I'm not sure if it's a whistle or a screech, but I think it sounds more like a whistle.

TIA!

-John

Ugh. How could I go about determining the source of said vacuum leak?

One way is to try to trace it by ear!! Have someone hold the gas down while you listen.

Default Can't be the blower.

Okay, so I've had this problem for a little while, it didn't just start over the weekend. Since it's started, I've run the car with the blower completely off, the radio off, and all accessories off. The sound ONLY comes when I'm giving the car gas around 2800-3000 RPMs. It can be just a little gas, or a medium push, but the sound is not there when I release the gas pedal. This is why I know (or maybe I just think) that it has to be somehow related to engine speed and my accelerator pedal.

But, I can't duplicate this while the car is parked. Or at least I haven't been able to yet. I'll try it again a few times, after I'm sure I've heard the sound during my drive.

I might have a friend of mine verify that I'm not just hearing things and have him help me with a stationary test run.

Just wanted to clear it up that I have it isolated to the engine speed and gas pedal. But, like I had in my original post, I haven't determined if it's a whistling or a screeching (air leak or grinding).

Default Re: How to audibly isolate a vacuum leak.

If you simply try to "listen" it will be difficult to isolate the problem to a specific area.

A better way is to get a 3-foot section of clear plastic tubing. Block one ear and hold one end of the tubing up to your other ear. Then move the other end of the tube around the suspicious area of the engine compartment and if there is a leak you will be able to narrow it down fairly quickly.
