How does the cam locking tool work?
What exactly does this hard to find tool do? Is there an alternative way of taking off the timing belt so I can get to the thermostat, water pump, etc.I will be doing a complete update to that part of the car.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Tool #3243 has a pair of pins on each end of the bar - one large, one small...
When the crankshaft is set to TDC, the pins of the camshaft locking tool engage matching holes in the camshaft sprockets, which then prevents them from turning. As far as obtaining one of these tools (plus the crankshaft holder #3242), you can find them all of the time on eBay (~$100 for the two tools), or you can rent them from Blauparts.com (~$55).

Careful, Gary, that's not entirely true.
The tool engages the plates that fit onto the slots on the ends of the cams. This locks the cams in place, but allows you to loosen the sprockets and rotate them on the cams. With the cams locked in place and the sprockets free, cam timing can be dialed in perfectly. This is the main reason for using the correct tool, rather than the "close enough" method.

blauparts rents it for $35. I would go for it.
without tool there is some risk to disturb timing. Especially the crankshaft one.
The FAQ (link below) has instructions on how to replace timing belt without the tools. It also has a page from the manual on how to replace the belt with tool.
If you will try to use tools, it will take some effort to find crankshaft sensor. Check this forum. People posted info on this.

True enough, but until you loosen the bolt securing the sprocket to the cam, you've locked the...
camshafts so they don't move. As the Bentley Manual states, you are suppose to loosen the sprocket bolts a few turns, remove the camshaft tool, install the TB, and then re-install the camshaft tool so you can tighten the sprocket bolts and adjust the tensioner. Some people have skipped this step to be "close enough", but I would strictly follow the official repair procedure.

I agree. Popping the sprockets loose and dialing in the cam timing is important...
to me anyway.
I just wanted to make sure no one got the impression that cam timing is not adjustable.
