Default How to drop auto trans pan '92 FWD

Hey there,

Was wondering if anyone could post a simple procedure for changing the filter on a 1992 FWD Auto transmission? My car has the dipstick tube, and the underside looked different to me than that in the Bentley CD I have.

I'd like to change the fluid a few times in the next month to completely flush the old fluid out. The shifting not quite what it used to be.

Thanks

Dave

It's pretty easy: First, the dipstick tube is bolted to the tranny about half way down. You have to take that bolt out, i completley cut the bracket that bolts it to the car becuase its the biggest PITA for a stupid little thing. I think theres a connector right where the bolt is, i believe its easier to remove the bolt if you unplug that connector.

Next you just undo the pan bolts and manuver it off. The only other things is that there is no drain plug, so you need to be careful you don't spill fluid everywhere. If i remember right, the filter is right there, just unscrew and replace. Also replace the pan gasket while you do this. And be careful with those pan bolts, i had one break off and had to bore it out.

Default Thanks! One more question.

How many times should I drain the fluid to really flush the old gunky fluid out? Is most of the fluid in the torque converter?

I believe a good bit is in the the torque converter. Best thing to do is find the tranny capacity, then subtract what you have to put back in when you fill it back up. That should give you an idea of how much is in the torque converter. Not for sure on how many times you should do it. Good luck.
