How important is the cam plug cover part that goes over it.

I orderd the canm plug from VW and have never seen what it actually looked like before. Well when I got it today I thought dam that looks exactly like what I saw on my engine. I thought the black roung plug was the cover and below that was the bolts that held the cam plug in place.
I looked at it closer today and the cover isn't there or the three bolts that hold it on, my cam plug is leaking but its firmly in place and hasn't poped out. I am going to the pick and pull this saturday to get another cover but the plug is not going to fall out right, its been like that from june when I bought it. Is it common not to have them put back on.

It's just a rubber clad metal cap that is pinched in place by the rear cam bearing cap. There is nothing external on the cylinder head that holds it in place.
To remove it, you have to remove the valve cover, then remove the rear most cam bearing cap.
Installation is a reversal.

I have three threaded holes around the cam plug on the outside though, is there supposed to be something there.
I have to go to the pick and pull anyway so I will just look at the two audies there also.

Nope, the 3 holes are not used. The plug is just "pinched" in place and it has the rubber cladding with grooves where it get's pinched.

Well I'm glad I was trolling through the forums today and saw this.
I've had a very minor burning odor for a while that I couldn't quite place, but knew it was strongest on the rear passenger side of the engine. Then I looked back there and saw a round plug with the circular pattern ridges and a dribble of oil underneath indicating it was leaking. And directly below was the manifold so I suspected that was my odor source. I hadn't researched this yet to even know what to call it but there was this post just waiting for me.
Thanks Austinado for the description of the gasket and cam plug change, that will help.
