They are sensative enough that if exhale near the end, the fluid will turn yellow indicating CO2 gas

Default Bought this quite a while ago so I don't know how much it was. Works instantly though.

There's a suction "bulb" at the top, and so it works like a turkey baster. You just lower the coolant level in whatever you're testing, so that you don't suck up coolant which contaminates your blue chemical and then you have to dump the blue, rinse and refill.

With the engine running, you just squeeze the bulb slowly about 10 times and watch what the upper chamber does. If it stays blue, you're good. If it changes to yellow, you have a headgasket leak allowing hot combustion gasses into the cooling system.

Default Yep, that's exactly mine. Mine has a "Snap-on" decal on the box because it was sold through them.

A nice diagnostic tool to have in the quiver!

Default Re: UPDATE: 2a

Ah the parts fiasco.....

First, I thought I made it clear I wanted the parts this morning and paid $33 for that service. They arrived at 3pm and I was told by my sales person at Pelican Parts (he just answers the phone in his house, it's not an actual business) that; no, if I wanted morning delivery that was $47.50 and he'd offered that. I don't remember that part of the conversation, but whatever.

The heater core was supposed to be a Behr until, instead it's something by "ACM Germany." It's too short and the fittings are too small a diameter. It's part number 443-819-030.

I remember reading in one guy's heater core R&R story (in the FAQ's I think) that there was an issue with fitting diameters and to watch for that. O31C appears to get you the 18.5mm fitting diameter, but if you go looking around, it references back to the 030 number.

Even the local VW dealer (who couldn't order it for me anyway) found that just the 030 part was available, but no specs were given.

So, now that I'm loosing my patience, I just ordered one locally for $127 that specs the 18.5mm fittings and is "AKG" brand which is the OEM unit. Insert F word here ----->_____.

Default Nice writeup. For future reference, you can do this job without removing the center or rear console

It requires a bit of contortion but you can attach and detach all of the ductwork from the footwells. I pulled the glovebox and the panels above the pedals but that's it.
