Default ignition switch: is this correct?

ignition key wouldn't spring back after starting; had to nudge it back. seems like a common problem here. bought electrical part and swapped it. plastic on old switch was really bad ready to fall apart and short everything out. anyhow i replaced it and problem went away.

it is still a little sticky, but different. sometimes it won't turn all the way off and key won't come out. have to giggle it to get it back. other times, it sticks turning on. it's getting worse.

here are questions:

am i right, there are only two parts? 1:electrical part that slides on the end and 2.mechanical part with the key tumblers.

if i buy the mechanical part, i think i get new keys and live with separate keys or rekey the door locks. correct?

is the mechanical part strictly a dealer item? any sources if not?

There is/are ignition lock assembly, ignition lock cylinder, ignition switch(electrical). No the mechanical part is not a strictly dealer item but if you want the ignition lock cylinder you'll need: Without Key, to Retain One Key System, Vin and Key Number Needed To Order Part.

When I replaced the plastic aft portion on mine, I also removed the front mechanical portion, as it was acting simular to yours. I removed it, disassembled it, cleaned out all the crap inside it, relubed it, & reassembled.

WOW! What a differance it made! ;o)

Default thanks

i was thinking of doing that, but when i went to take it out, i did not have a security torx (one with a hole in it), that is what was required to take out the mechanical part. when you took it apart was there any wear evident? or just dried up old grease?

are those your cars pictured? how many miles on the 93? my 92 100 is getting close to 180k. i wonder if you have any other key related problems. my infrared remote keyless entry gave up the ghost long ago, so i use my key. unfortunately, my key sticks in door too. it's almost like my key is worn, but it works fine in the other side. have you ever had that problem?

No wear was evident in the mechanical of mine, just real dirty.

My 93 has 96,000 miles.

Key do wear, so ya might consider getting a new one made?
