Intermittent lack of power???
1996 A6 2.8 Q 128K
Recently purchased with about 4 years of history. About once a week the car would refuse to accelerate or would miss or ping on the freeway. Check Engine would flash. Read the codes at Autozone, listed missfire on all cly, and various fuel mixture codes.
The car always ran cool, so decided to do the tstat and a tuneup. Tstat came out of the block in two pieces! Anyway new tstat and plugs and wires, and a fuel filter only solved my temp problem.
Decided the coil pack must be faulty so replaced with new. Now I got rid of the flashing CEL, but still have this strange loss of power. Pushing on the throttle makes the engine RPM drop. Turn off the engine, and start it again to clear the problem for a few miles anyway.
Is the fuel pump failing? Thanks.

I would probably replace the fuel pump, but try cleaning the MAF as ImQuattro suggests, first.
You might consider a bit more diagnostics.
You could have a dead throttle position sensor, or a bad connection at it's plug-in.

Re: curious... are you using the stock air filter or the cone type? MAF may be contaminated...
totally stock airbox. I will look into the MAF though. What about a fuel pump relay? Something gets reset when the key is turned off...

There is a mess of vacume lines right under the mass airflow sensor
they get disconnected. make sure to check them all. besides check all of the vacume lines around the engine.replace if they are hardened and/or damaged. You can buy the vacume line hose from any VW dealer for about 10$/meter here is Canada. US should be cheaper.
