I have a 1995 q sedan. You're right, not much power below 3k. However, not much above it either :-) The tranny shifts low, btu does have some "learning" so it adapts if you drive it differently - a little. Or so I'm told.
Its not a performance machine. But it is very reliable, and, to me, enjoyable to glide around in.
I service the tranny ( about $125-150 at a good indie tranny shop) every 40-50k miles. no flush, just fluid change and filter.

In your owner's manual it talks about how to wake the car up from being in economy mode, which it will put itself into if you are driving it gentle/normal. Simply depress the accelerator pedal quickly and let up. You don't need to hit the kickdown switch. Just a quick depression of the pedal and you will feel the transmission jerk and come alive....and you are now in sport mode!
I know you've tested the accelerator cable and with the pedal fully on the floor you're getting full throttle. Tighten up the adjustment of the throttle cable anyway. Pull the throttle cable toward the driver's side, and put the E clip back in maybe 2 or 3 notches toward the passenger side. That'll bring on the power a whole lot sooner.
Also, read the instructions for doing an induction service (FAQ's or just look in the archives) and do that. At 200,000mi your injectors aren't spraying nice, the backs of the valves are packed with carbon, the intake runners are packed with carbon....basically everything looks even worse than your throttle body. The more cleaning you can do, the better your performance will be.
Some here also keep the shifter in 3rd, so that the trans won't shift in to the overdrive 4th. That's a nice option around town too.
But adjusting the accelerator cable and doing an induction service will make a bid difference.

I have the sedan version, 280 horsepower, 340ft.lbs of torque. I can put the transmission into sport mode by pressing a pedal with my left foot and moving a lever with my hand. =)
